Heating oil costs – where to get help
The ongoing conflict in the Middle East has led to a sharp increase in energy costs, including heating oil used in the UK and Ireland.
OFTEC is not involved in fuel supply, however we have created this page to help signpost customers who may be struggling to afford to buy heating oil. We will endeavour to update this page whenever new information becomes available.
Government support schemes
In March 2026, the UK Government launched a £50 million emergency fund. To access this support, consumers are encouraged to contact the relevant organisation where they live:
England – Crisis and Resilience Fund
Scotland – Advice Direct Scotland
Northern Ireland – Home Heating Oil Support Scheme
Republic of Ireland – Fuel allowance
The support is not available to everyone, so households should check the eligibility criteria for any scheme before applying.
UKIFDA Cold Weather Priority Scheme
If you are aged 75 or over and rely on heating oil, make sure you are registered for the UKIFDA Cold Weather Priority Scheme. Participating distributors can prioritise deliveries during periods of extreme cold weather or fuel shortages. Encourage eligible friends, relatives and neighbours to register too.
How to register
1. Contact your local UKIFDA member heating oil distributor. Find a Distributor - UKIFDA
2. Ask to be added to the Cold Weather Priority (CWP) list.
3. If you switch suppliers, you must re-register with the new distributor.
General advice
Demand for heating oil is higher over the autumn and winter, so we recommend monitoring tank levels regularly, maintaining adequate heating oil levels, and ordering in good time.
The liquid fuels distribution industry’s trade association, UKIFDA, recommends keeping at least 500 litres of heating oil in tanks wherever possible to reduce the risk of running low during periods of increased demand, severe weather, or unexpected delivery delays.
It is also worth speaking to your heating oil distributor about payment options, fuel management and available support to help manage the cost.
OFTEC registered technicians can advise you on your heating system and tank security. We recommend annual servicing to maximise your boiler’s efficiency.
